Plymouth is spectacularly located on Plymouth sound, at the head of the rivers Plym and Tamar. The sound itself is a huge natural harbour, and since the building of the mile long Plymouth breakwater over a century ago, it has been the perfect shelter for shipping both Military and Merchant.
A walk from the town centre up to Plymouth Hoe, is a great way to view the Sound and see the splendid view that supposedly Sir Francis Drake saw when playing bowls here, before setting sail to defeat the Spanish Armada in 1588
On the top of the Hoe is Smeatons Tower, originally the Eddystone lighthouse, but rebuilt here in 1882, it is open during the summer and worth a short (if rather steep) walk up if only for the view. Also on the Hoe is the Plymouth Dome, an audio visual attraction running through the history of Plymouth and its heroes.
Plymouth is also well located for exploring the attractions of Devon and Cornwall,.
To the west just across the Tamar river lies Cornwall, this can be reached either via Road bridge at Saltash, Car ferry at Torpoint, or foot ferry across to Cremyll (an ideal way to cross the Tamar for a visit to Mount Edgecumbe).
